Moodboard of makeup and costume ideas

I want my female model to have a few different looks, firstly I want my model to look quite natural and be dressed in something quite simple like a black dress. I think that a top with writing or designs will work well because tops of that style are popular with teenagers nowadays, my model's facial expressions will be smiley, screaming and cheeky to show her youthfulness and innocence. Bright, colourful make up using the colours blue, green, yellow and pink will convey fun, madness and messiness as a teenager. I will try and capture my model while she is whipping her hair to show excitement and make it look artistic. Other make up looks will be more dramatic and posed, this conveys maturity and a flirtatious vibe to make photos appear more professional and suitable for a high quality music magazine. Some costumes will be quite plain so the audiences attention will be drawn to her face, certain accessories may look good with different costumes, e.g. a orange heart shaped ring, silver triangle ring, sunglasses and headbands.

Front cover plans

Rules of thirds

In the rule of thirds, photos are divided into thirds with two imaginary lines vertically and two lines horizontally making three columns, three rows and nine sections. The most important compositional elements and leading lines are placed on or near the imaginary lines and where the lines intersect.

By placing points of interest in the intersections or along the lines your photo become more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally.

For example in a portrait the eyes may be lined up with the upper horizontal line and each eye is where the upper horizontal intersects with a vertical line.

The main reason for rule of thirds is to show the points of interest and intentionally placing the lines in particular places. Also post production editing tools today have good tools for cropping and re-framing images so they fit within the rules.

Moodboard

My mood board consists of images, text and colour schemes which I like; I have researched different editing effects to enhance the colour and style of a photo which I may potentially use on my own photography. I think that the radiant, luminous colours fit in with the genre of pop which is fun, youthful and exciting; the pop art style is funky and cool which would appeal to my target audience of 16-21 year olds. A plain, block colour backdrop works best so the background will not look crowded or unclear, the model and text will stand out. Popular brands like converse, ipod/phone, beats etc will be included in my music magazine as they will appeal to both male and females and to teenagers who make up the majority of my target audience. Current artists and bands are important and will be included too, I have found a variety of album covers which represent the contemporary music scene. Social networking sites like facebook & twitter and apps like instagram will increase readership of my music magazine if it generates hits or trends this will produce more publicity and expansion of popularity, my target audience will be able to keep up to date with my music magazine and interact through competitions etc.

Planning a photoshoot

My front cover will be image dominated with a mid-shot or close up shot of my model, who will be a young female to fit in with my target audience of 16-21 year olds, this is so it will catch the attention of potential readers; the background will be plain with one block colour, probably white so the subject stands out. The photo will be taken indoors against a wall where the lighting will be quite bright so the details of the models face will be prominent, a good quality camera will be used. I will take a range of shots from different angles (e.g. high, low, from behind, left, right, direct) and distances and my model will pose with different facial expressions e.g. smiling, moody, serious etc also with a variety of body language e.g. hand on hip, leg behind other, arm behind head etc. Different looks will be experimented with, but because my music magazine has the genre of pop it’s important that my model is dressed in a colourful, youthful, fun costume to convey this brand identity and make up may be used during the photo shoot to make it look more professional. Some props may be used like sunglasses or hats however it’s important that the model is making eye contact so the audience can make a connection with them.
